Volunteers play an important role in helping the Fortress Louisbourg Association bring history, community, and special events to life.

Whether you’re interested in historical programming, helping with events, supporting visitors, or lending a hand behind the scenes, there are many ways to get involved.

You don’t need to be a historian or have previous experience — just an interest in contributing your time, skills, and enthusiasm.

Volunteer opportunities vary throughout the year depending on our programs, events, and operational needs.

Ways to Volunteer

⚜️ Special Events

Many of our largest events depend on volunteers to help everything run smoothly.

Opportunities may include:

Guest welcome and check-in
Event setup and teardown
Wayfinding and visitor assistance
Activity support
Vendor assistance
Decorations and event preparation
Photography or event support
General event assistance

Examples may include seasonal celebrations, community events, evening programs, and special FLA events throughout the year.

🏰 Historical Programming & Militia

Volunteers can also become involved in historical interpretation and re-enactment opportunities in partnership with Parks Canada.

The original Louisbourg militia was made up of fishermen, farmers, and townspeople who assisted regular troops in times of emergency.

Today, volunteers from all walks of life help bring that aspect of 18th-century Louisbourg to life through marching, military demonstrations, and black powder programming.

Militia Requirements

To participate in the militia:

You must be a member of the Fortress Louisbourg Association
You must be at least 18 years old
Black powder certification and training requirements must be completed before participating in applicable activities

🤝 Community & Behind-the-Scenes Support

Not every volunteer role happens in front of visitors.

Depending on current needs, opportunities may also include:

Preparing materials for programs and events
Assisting with membership or community initiatives
Helping with displays and exhibits
Supporting fundraising activities
Administrative assistance
Historical or archival projects
Special projects and anniversary initiatives
