Job Summary

The Fortress Louisbourg Association (FLA) is seeking a professional and customer-focused Tavern Attendant to join the team at our historic tavern location.

The Tavern Attendant is responsible for providing high-quality food and beverage service while delivering an engaging and welcoming visitor experience. Working under the supervision of the Food & Beverage Services Manager, the Attendant ensures efficient service, maintains cleanliness and safety standards, and contributes to the overall atmosphere of the historic site.

This role combines hospitality service with heritage interpretation, offering visitors an immersive and memorable experience at one of Canada’s most significant historic sites.

Key Responsibilities

Food & Beverage Service

  • Prepare and serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages in a timely and professional manner.
  • Serve food items according to established service standards.
  • Interact with customers, take orders, and provide recommendations based on preferences.
  • Accurately process transactions using a cash register and Square POS system.
  • Check and replace kegs and assist with bar setup and breakdown as required.

Customer Experience & Interpretation

  • Provide friendly, engaging service to visitors.
  • Answer basic questions about the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site, including general history and daily programming.
  • Interpret aspects of the historic tavern experience in an engaging and appropriate manner.
  • Cross-promote other Fortress Louisbourg Association offerings, including restaurants, King’s Bakery, gift shops and events.

Operations & Inventory Support

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked bar and service area.
  • Restock inventory and supplies as needed.
  • Assist with monitoring inventory levels and notifying supervisors when reordering is required.
  • Follow proper food handling and beverage service procedures.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all food and beverage regulations.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation standards at all times.
  • Follow workplace health and safety guidelines.

General Support

  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Assist with setup, closing procedures, and cleaning tasks.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Responsible Beverage Service Training is mandatory and is paid for by the employer.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience working in a tavern, bar, restaurant, or hospitality setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of mixing, garnishing, and serving beverages is an asset.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • WHMIS and Occupational Health & Safety certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Reliable transportation to the Fortress of Louisbourg.
  • Basic French language skills are an asset, but not required.
