Some things to remember

Weather at the Fortress of Louisbourg is changeable and often subject to chilly winds. Bring a sweater or jacket, even if it’s the middle of the summer and it seems perfectly warm when you leave your place of residence.

The Fortress of Louisbourg is an authentic reproduction. Streets and steps are made of uneven cobblestones and packed dirt, so wear comfortable walking shoes or sneakers that you aren’t afraid of getting a little dirty.

Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all of the buildings.

Due to the sensitive nature of the reconstruction and the artifacts, we ask you not to use flash photography inside the buildings even though they are dimly lit.

The Fortress has several domesticated animals as part of its depiction of daily life. They are carefully looked after, so please do not feed them. We also ask you not to feed any wild animals you may see, such as seagulls or squirrels.

Walls and gun embrasures are constructed using authentic 18th century methods and are therefore not as sturdy as modern structures. Please do not climb them or allow your children to climb them.
